«IN THE ΗEIGHTS», ΤΟ ΜΙΟΥΖΙΚΑΛ ΤΗΣ ΧΡΟΝΙΑΣ

Δεν είναι και εύκολο να στήνεις μια τελετή βράβευσης. Ειδικά τώρα που τα έχουμε δει και τα έχουμε ακούσει όλα. Η πρόσφατη απονομή των θεατρικών βραβείων Τόνι απέδειξε ότι μετά τα Οσκαρ και τα Γκράμμι, η διάθεση και η εκτέλεση είναι σίγουρα πιο μινιμαλιστική, μαζί και πιο ξεκούραστη για τον τηλεθεατή.

Γιατί άλλο να τα παρακολουθείς ζωντανά και άλλο να ακούς ατέλειωτους μονολόγους από ανθρώπους που δεν έχεις ξαναδεί ποτέ στη ζωή σου, πολύ απλά γιατί ανήκουν σε ένα συγκεκριμένο κύκλωμα. Αρκετά όμως με την ατμόσφαιρα. Οπως και να ’χει, η τηλεθέαση έδειξε ότι όλο και λιγότεροι ενδιαφέρονται για αντίστοιχες απονομές...

Και οι νικητές των φετινών Τόνι (που παρακολούθησαν 6,19 εκατ. τηλεθεατές); Το «In the Ηeights» βραβεύτηκε ως το καλύτερο μιούζικαλ της χρονιάς και το «August: Osage County» ξεχώρισε σαν το καλύτερο έργο. Ομως ήταν το ριμέικ του «South Pacific», του δημοφιλούς μιούζικαλ των Ρότζερς και Χάμερσταϊν, που απέσπασε τα περισσότερα Τόνι, εφτά συνολικά.

Κανένα από τα βραβεία όμως δεν αποτέλεσε έκπληξη. Με παρουσιάστρια της βραδιάς τη Γούπι Γκόλντμπεργκ (που έχει γίνει μάλλον εξπέρ στην παρουσίαση), η οποία έκανε πατίνια στη σκηνή, ντύθηκε σαν καβούρι από τη «Μικρή γοργόνα», πέταξε πάνω από τους θεατές, το χιούμορ έδινε λύσεις στις στιγμές αμηχανίας.

Και μπορεί πολλά πετυχημένα έργα του Μπρόντγουεϊ να μην ήταν καν υποψήφια. Ομως φεύγοντας από την απονομή όλοι μιλούσαν για δύο πρόσωπα: Λιν-Μανουέλ Μιράντα («In the Ηeights») και Στου («Passing Strange»).

Whoopi Goldberg Does An Amazing Job Hosting the 2008 Tony Awards-Check Out This Year's Winners

Although I have been looking forward to the Sunday June 15, 2008 Tony Awards telecast for several months now, today has been a very special one for me. I got to celebrate Father's Day with my family today and after the fantastic outdoor Bar-B-Q we had, the entire family joined me in our family room (except for our youngest son Matt who is away at College) and we watched this years awards show from 8-11pm. Our business is called Applause Theatre Service and we provide reserved seating for all Tony Awards web site and catch some of the telecast.

Although I usually can pick the winners only about 30-40 % of the time, my selections garnered around 65-70 % this year. Maybe it has something to do with seeing over 20 Broadway productions this year.

When Whoopi signed off and said goodbye tonight she said "come to New York and see a Broadway Show". You know, I started to think about what she said for a few minutes and think how great it is that she was this year's host.
