Ernest Hemingway 1899 - 1961

Ernest Hemingway was found dead of a shotgun wound in the head at his home on July 2, 1961. His wife, Mary, said that he had killed himself accidentally while cleaning the weapon. Mr. Hemingway, whose writings won him a Nobel Prize and a Pulitzer Prize, would have been 62 years old July 21.

Ο Eρνεστ Χέμινγουεϊ έγραψε δύο θεατρικά έργα, παρ’ όλο που κανένας πια δεν μιλάει γι’ αυτά. Το πρώτο ολοκληρώθηκε το 1926 και ήταν το «Σήμερα είναι Παρασκευή», ένα μονόπρακτο τοποθετημένο ιστορικά το απόγευμα της Μεγάλης Παρασκευής, όταν τρεις Ρωμαίοι εκατόνταρχοι συναντώνται σε μια ταβέρνα για να συζητήσουν τις σταυρώσεις που θυμούνται περισσότερο. Το άλλο έργο του Χέμινγουεϊ, το οποίο ανεβαίνει στο Μανχάταν στις 26 Φεβρουαρίου από τη Θεατρική Εταιρεία Mint, ονομάζεται «Η Πέμπτη Φάλαγγα». Είναι ένα θεατρικό έργο, γραμμένο το 1937, την εποχή που ο Χέμινγουεϊ ήταν ανταποκριτής στην Ισπανία και κάλυπτε τον ισπανικό Εμφύλιο. Το έργο έχει πάρει το όνομά του από τη δήλωση του στρατηγού Φράνκο ότι είχε τέσσερις φάλαγγες που προχωρούσαν προς την Μαδρίτη και ακόμα μία, πέμπτη φάλαγγα πιστών μέσα στην πόλη, έτοιμη να επιτεθεί από τα άκρα. THOUGH no one talks about them much, Ernest Hemingway wrote two plays. The first, finished in 1926, was “Today Is Friday,” a forgettable one-acter set on the evening of the original Good Friday, when three Roman centurions get together at a tavern to discuss memorable crucifixions they’ve seen, including the one that afternoon. Not surprisingly, they sound a lot like Hemingway’s Nick Adams. “He looked pretty good to me in there today,” one of them says admiring Jesus’ stoicism.

His other play, “The Fifth Column,” which the Mint Theater Company in Manhattan is presenting, beginning Feb. 26, is a full-length drama written in 1937, when Hemingway was a correspondent covering the Spanish Civil War. The play takes its name from Franco’s remark that he had four columns advancing on Madrid and a fifth column of loyalists inside the city ready to attack from the rear. “The Fifth Column” is not about Franco sympathizers, however, but about an American war correspondent who is a secret agent for the Republicans, and Hemingway worked on it while holed up in the Hotel Florida with all the other war correspondents.
